From the Chair
In difficult times, it’s easy to lose direction in search of a way forward. The national philanthropic community finds itself at just such a crossroads, with many nonprofits facing federal funding cuts and donors challenged to assist with the shortfall.
Our foundation has navigated many obstacles during its decades of grantmaking. We persevered, remaining true to our roots and focused on what we do best: fund programs that deliver the biggest positive outcomes and clearly make a difference. In the current environment, our path forward is to adhere to the fundamentals that have fueled our success as we embrace our ongoing responsibility to serve those who need our help.
I was recently inspired by a local nonprofit leader whose organization’s exceptional work is under pressure on many levels. Their message is to maintain a sense of optimism, stay true to your mission, and strengthen local partnerships. We like that!
As we work through this unfolding scenario, I encourage local nonprofits and funders to be proud of what they have achieved, remain confident in their ability to move forward, and find creative ways to deliver and support the exceptional programs that make our community stronger.
Thank you for your interest in the Mosher Foundation. You have our commitment that we will be doing all that we possibly can to continue making a meaningful difference in the health and vibrancy of Santa Barbara.
Sincerely,

Edward E. Birch
Board Chair
Our History
The Mosher Foundation was established by Samuel B. Mosher, founder of Signal Oil and Gas, the largest independent oil company on the West Coast in the 1950s. A successful businessman and corporate executive, Mr. Mosher’s personal passion was growing prize-winning orchids and other exotic flowers. Dos Pueblos, his 45,000-acre ranch north of Santa Barbara, included Dos Pueblos Orchid Company, a standalone wholesale flower growing operation. Following Mr. Mosher’s death in 1970, his wife Margaret served as President of the Mosher Foundation until her death in 2002. It was her wish that Dr. Edward E. Birch, Vice President of the Foundation and longtime advisor and friend to the Mosher family, serve as President & CEO of the Mosher Foundation upon her passing. For over two decades, he and other members of the Birch family have led the activities of the Foundation, ensuring that it continually evolves to align with the changing needs of the Santa Barbara Community.
